After the Andromeda Ascendant and her captain Dylan Hunt were frozen for 300 years in the event horizon of a black hole the ship is saved by Beka Valentine and the crew of the Eureka Maru.

Dylan's fiancee Sara Riley has two appearances in the series: The Banks Of Lethe (1x08) and Home Fires (2x08). Furthermore there is a picture of her and Dylan that appears frequently.
Dylan's first officer Gaheris Rhade is killed in this episode. Nevertheless he appears several times in flashbacks: Forced Perspective (1x15) and Home Fires (2x08). In The Unconquerable Man (3x10) Gaheris get a bigger role when he is the Captain of the Andromeda Ascedant in a parallel universe. Because of his performance in this episode Steve Bacic (the actor of Gaheris Rhade) became a permanent member of the crew in Season Four (as Telemachus Rhade).

"Under the Night" can be found in the last stanza of the poem "September 1, 1939" by W.H. Auden (1907-1973):

"Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;"

The whistle by Harper when he's calling the other crew members of the Eureka Maru is a reference to "Star Trek - The Original Series" (1966-1969)

The High guard officer Cronan Thompson takes his name from a Usenet-membet with whom Robert Hewitt Wolfe was in contact. The real Thompson died of cancer in 1999 aged just 19. (Eldorado Drift)
