A recent research study done by the Oxford University in the U.K. suggests that taking fish oil supplements, can improve the quality of sleep for kids. The research study revealed that omega-3 fatty acids, which are bountiful in fish oils, led to kids sleeping for longer and waking up less in the night.

The Oxford University researchers provided kids who had difficulty sleeping either fish oil supplements for four months, or a placebo capsule. They studied 352 kids aged in between 7 and 9 who were struggling readers at a mainstream primary school. Parents were also advised to finish a survey, which revealed that four in ten of the kids suffered routine sleep disruptions. The researchers fitted wrist sensors to 43 of the kids rated as bad sleepers to monitor their motions in bed over five nights.

They found that kids taking the day-to-day fish oil supplement had 58 minutes' more sleep and seven fewer waking episodes per night compared with those on the placebo. Previous work done by the research team had actually uncovered low levels of omega 3 fatty acids in kids's blood, which predicted how well they could concentrate at school.

Adults and kids are advised to eat fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a minimum of twice a week, including one portion of oily fish such as salmon. Eating fish by children under 10, however, has more than halved in the past decade alone, with only about one portion of fish eaten a week on average. Of course, the majority of kids can be picky eaters, so researchers suggest that supplementing children with fish oil pills daily, such as our PLATINUM Series Fish Oil Omega 3, is a better option.

The research study, due to be published in the Journal of Sleep Research, found higher blood levels of the long-chain omega-3 DHA, the main omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain, were significantly connected with better sleep, including less bedtime resistance and complete sleep disturbance. What's more, higher levels of omega-3 have also been associated with improved brain power. The outcomes of the research study has not only opened many possibilities in treating common disorders amongst children, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it may also open up new research on the effects of fish oil on other sleep-related disorders across all age groups, like insomnia, sleep apnea and many others.
