Settled in 8119 CY by xenophobic humans who opposed humanity's close integration into the Commonwealth and its many advanced alien species, Mobius was ruled for centuries be a series of dictators--some benevolent, some tyrannical. The Commonwealth gave Mobius a wide berth until 9780 CY, when supreme leader Ferrin began a campaign of aggression against neighboring non-aligned systems. After Ferrin's violent death that year under mysterious circumstances, Mobius gained a Commonwealth-backed provisional government which promised to bring democracy to its long-suffering people. Unfortunately, the Commonwealth's collapse led to over 300 years of even more brutal tyranny under self-styled Great Compass Venetri (who had served as Chief Architect under the Ferrin administration), who claimed to be preserving stability in the face of domestic chaos and foreign aggression. On a happier note, Venetri in CY 10087 turned power over to a new government of national unity, which is in the process of liberalizing the government and even beginning negotiations to sign the restored Commonwealth Charter. After granting himself amnesty for any crimes and abuses he may have committed during three centuries in power, former leader Venetri vanished. His present whereabouts are unknown.

After signing the Commonwealth Charter, Mobius requested the protection of the Andromeda Ascendant against Machen Alpha, a technophobic world in a neighboring system. The people of Machen Alpha had created a new warship which had already destroyed another world. The Andromeda eventually destroyed this ship, though Mobius suffered massive geological and ecological damage because of the attack.

Mobius soon became the home of the High Guard command and academy, making it one of the most important worlds in the Restored Commonwealth.
