The High Guard is the Commonwealth' military force. Serving in this force is a privilege that many young people of all species dream of.
Before the Magog invasion and the Long Night, the High Guard had not been involved in any serious conflicts for a long time. Thus arose a discussion to disband the fleet or at least reduce its size significantly. However, this discussion stopped with the beginning of the Magog invasion.
After managing a peace treaty with the Magog on Antares, the nietzscheans, who regarded this peace as failure of the Commonwealth, started a massive rebellion.
The High Guard was not prepared to meet the nietzschean surprise attack and the following war of extermination. The last strong forces were extinguished during the battle of Witchhead. Some scattered remnants withdrew to Tarazed and preserved some of the Commonwealth' traditions on this isolated world.

Aufgaben der Ehrengarde
The High Guard was also strongly involved in representing the Commonwealth in interior and exterior matters, such as first contacts. Its whole appearance should to express the power and glory of the Commonwealth. Thus the design of the Starships were designed be a sign of strength, dignity and prosperity.
Being a military force, the main assignment of the High Guard was of course to maintain peace (for example by having an eye on the Kalderans), secure the borders and undertake research expeditions.
For these purposes, the High Guard ships were equipped with highly effective sensor arrays and weapons, being crowned by the Nova Bomb. The fact that actually using the Nova Bomb was not a part of the military doctrine, and that fact not being a secret made the rebellion a whole lot easier.

The High Guard is divided in 3 branches:
- Argosy (compare US Marine Corps) provides the contingents aboard ships. A sub-branch of Argosy are Argosy Special Operations (compare: KSK or Delta Force).
- The Lancer Corps (compare: US-Army or German Army) conducts larger operations that exceed Argosys possibilities.
- The Navy.
