Rev Bem receices a cry for help from his old friend Thaddeus Black: the Hajira on Serendipity are threatened by slave traders.

Refers to a english proverb from the early 16th century: "Every man for himself, and the devil take the hindmost..."

The "Finder of the Way" was Fleshrender, a Magog who founded the religious order of the Fatalfa.

The scene in which Szebos (the right hand of Ursari) is impaled by a spear is an alusion by Allan Eastman to a similar scene in "Apocalypse Now".
