Refers to an English proverb from the early 16th century: "Every man for himself, and the devil take the hindmost..."

The "Finder of the Way" was Fleshrender, a Magog who founded the religious order of The Way.

The scene in which Szebos (the right hand of Ursari) is impaled by a spear is an alusion by Allan Eastman to a similar scene in "Apocalypse Now".
